About Selkirk Hardwood
Spokane's trusted hardwood floor refinishing craftsmen — NWFA certified, locally owned, and committed to restoring the beauty of every floor we touch.
Founded in Spokane, Built on Craftsmanship
Selkirk Hardwood was founded in 2015 by a team of hardwood floor professionals who saw a gap in the Spokane market: homeowners deserved better than the inconsistent results and opaque pricing they were getting from general contractors who treated floor refinishing as an afterthought.
We started with a single truck, a set of professional-grade sanders, and a commitment to doing one thing exceptionally well — restoring hardwood floors. Named after the Selkirk Mountains that define our region's rugged, beautiful landscape, we set out to bring that same natural beauty back to the floors beneath our neighbors' feet.
Over the past decade, we've refinished more than 400 hardwood floors across the Inland Northwest. From original fir floors in 1920s South Hill Craftsman bungalows to modern white oak installations in Liberty Lake new construction, we've worked on every species, era, and condition of hardwood floor you can imagine.
Why Spokane Homeowners Choose Us
NWFA Certified Craftsmen
Every member of our refinishing team is certified by the National Wood Flooring Association. This isn't just a badge — it means we've completed rigorous training in sanding techniques, finish chemistry, moisture management, and wood species identification. When we assess your floor, we're drawing on standardized expertise, not guesswork.
We Understand Pacific Northwest Floors
Spokane's climate creates unique challenges for hardwood floors that coastal contractors and national chains simply don't understand. Our region experiences dramatic seasonal swings: winter humidity can drop below 20% when furnaces run nonstop from October through April, then summer monsoon moisture pushes levels back up. This cycle causes wood to contract and expand more aggressively than in milder climates.
We account for this in every project. Our finish systems, gap-filling materials, and acclimation protocols are specifically calibrated for the Inland Northwest's semi-arid continental climate. We use flexible fillers that move with seasonal wood movement instead of rigid products that crack and pop out. We recommend specific humidity ranges and provide every customer with a seasonal care guide tailored to Spokane conditions.
Neighborhoods We Serve
We've worked in virtually every Spokane neighborhood and surrounding community:
- South Hill: Home to Spokane's densest concentration of historic Craftsman homes with original fir and oak floors. We specialize in preserving the character of these century-old floors while modernizing their finish for today's lifestyle.
- North Side & Garland District: A mix of mid-century homes and newer construction. We frequently see maple and mixed hardwood floors that need careful species-specific treatment.
- Spokane Valley: The fastest-growing residential area in the county. Ranch-style homes from the 1970s-90s with builder-grade oak are our most common refinishing projects here.
- Liberty Lake: Newer homes with engineered hardwood and modern wide-plank installations. We handle factory-finished and site-finished floors alike.
- Browne's Addition & West Central: Historic neighborhoods with some of the most beautiful original floors in the city — and some of the most challenging restoration projects.
- Cheney, Medical Lake & Airway Heights: We serve the broader Spokane County area with the same pricing and warranty as in-city projects.

Pacific Northwest Climate & Your Hardwood Floors
Many homeowners don't realize how dramatically Spokane's climate affects their hardwood floors. Unlike Seattle's consistently damp marine climate, the Inland Northwest experiences true four-season extremes:
- Winter (Oct–Apr): Indoor humidity plummets to 15-25% as forced-air furnaces run constantly. Wood contracts, gaps open between boards, and finishes become brittle. This is when most floor damage occurs.
- Spring: Rapid moisture changes as snow melts and rain returns. Floors absorb ambient moisture and swell, sometimes causing cupping if the transition is too fast.
- Summer: Hot, dry conditions with occasional thunderstorm humidity spikes. UV exposure through windows can fade unprotected floors in as little as one season.
- Fall: The ideal time for refinishing — moderate temperatures and stable humidity levels allow finishes to cure perfectly.
We educate every customer on seasonal care, recommend whole-house humidifiers for winter, and use finish systems specifically engineered to flex with Spokane's temperature and humidity swings.
